My Passion, Our Cause

Jessica Shefsick - Thursday, January 01, 2015

As a small business owner and a human on this planet, I feel a responsibility in helping to make the world a better place. I could contribute to this effort in infinite ways, and maybe I will. But today, New Years Day 2015, I am committing to reducing waste. Americans make more than 200 million tons of garbage each year, enough to fill Busch Stadium from top to bottom twice a day. And where do you think all this garbage goes? That’s right, a landfill near your home. Landfills are toxic and have been linked to increased risks of certain types of cancer, including bladder, brain and leukemia. Furthermore, a study by researchers at the London School of Hygiene and Medicine also found that babies born to mothers who live near landfills have a greater risk of birth defects. Health reasons aside, wouldn’t you choose fresh clean land for play and exploration as opposed to toxic wastelands? I would.

As the population grows, our need for more landfills increases. But, it doesn’t have to. We need to wake up to simple waste reduction and being responsible for the waste we create. Think about what we take and what we buy. Will it end up in landfill? If so, is it necessary? The answer is usually no, it is not necessary. No we don’t need that happy meal toy, no we don’t need the free koozie or rubber bracelet, no we don’t need Styrofoam under our fruits and vegetables wrapped in plastic (this is absurd), and no we don’t need to use disposable dishes (just wash the dish)! Disposables were invented in the 1950’s for the overworked housewife that desperately needed a break from washing dishes once in a while. Fast forward 65 years. Everything now comes in a “convenient” disposable. And this “convenience” is where the carelessness began.

Now for someone who is obsessed with waste like me, it is awful to think about my business and how much waste we as an industry produce. Think about going into Ulta or Sephora, look around, everything will eventually end up in a landfill. Lipsticks, mascaras, lotions and potions. All of these items get used and pitched, so sad. So again, in an effort to reduce waste, myself and my team will be using to upcylce all of our used cosmetics starting 1/1/15. TerraCycle is a company on a mission to eliminate the idea of waste. They do this by creating waste collection programs (each one is called a “Brigade”) for previously non-recyclable, or difficult-to-recycle, waste. The collected waste is then converted into new products, ranging from recycled park benches to upcycled backpacks. With great joy, Bride’s Side Beauty is now a part of the personal care and beauty brigade with Terracyle and can accept any of the following items for upcylcying.

  • Hair care packaging such as shampoo and conditioner bottles, non aerosol sprays, and hair paste jars.
  • Skin care packaging such as lip balm tubes, face soap dispensers, lotion bottles or tubes.
  • Cosmetics packaging such as lipstick cases, lip gloss tubes, mascara tubes, eye shadow cases, foundation packaging, powder cases, eyeliner, concealer and lipsticks.

You can bring any of these items to our studio and we will gladly send them to be upcyled on your behalf.

I pledge to be environmentally responsible in my business and in my home. In 2015 myself and my family will also start composting our food waste, while continuing to recycle. In addition to these efforts, I also volunteer with a local non-profit group called Experience Green, whose mission is sustainability. I hope my passion for the environment inspires you, or at least makes you think.

Here’s to a better tomorrow and a wonderful 2015, Cheers! -Jess

Your Countdown to Flawless

Jessica Shefsick - Wednesday, December 03, 2014

As a licensed Esthetician of over 13 years and a former Esthetics Instructor of 7 years, the subject of skincare is always close to my heart. Currently I work solely as a makeup artist, and with my previous experience in skincare, I know that your makeup will only look as good as your skin underneath. In fact, even though I only provide makeup services now, I still named my makeup business Bride’s Side Beauty (pronounced skins in), because I believe that “beautiful skin is always in”, that’s how strongly I feel on this subject. So with that said, please allow me to give you some helpful tips and guidelines for your skin to look it’s absolute best for your big day.

By now you have probably spent a considerable amount of time thinking about how you want to look on your wedding day. Your gown, your shoes, and your jewelry have surely been the front runners in terms of style and beauty. But, have you thought about your skin and how IT will look for the big day? This is a very important detail not be overlooked! Your guests will notice your gown and maybe your jewelry, but the one thing they absolutely won’t miss is your FACE! I feel having beautiful skin (and makeup) can be your best accessory. So please, follow this countdown to flawless skin, a beautiful accessory not to be missed.

6 months prior - Start on a professional skin care routine! This routine should be for your personal skin type and condition(s). If you’re not sure what skin type you have or what conditions need to be treated, you should see an Esthetician for a full skin analysis. This routine should include:

  • Cleansing (preferably with a clairsonic or similar device)
  • Toning
  • Serum (to correct or repair)
  • Moisturize or Hydrate with SPF

  • Exfoliation
  • Mask

4 months prior - Start a monthly or bi-monthly professional facial routine. You could even choose a hydrafacial instead of a regular facial, or rotate between the two. FYI, A hydrafacial is a machine assisted facial delivering extra exfoliation and hydration. A regular facial is more “hands on” with massage and extractions included.

4-2 months prior - If you have specific skin concerns such as hyperpigmentation (brown spots) or acne this is a good time to start a series of chemical peels to help correct those issues. Again, please see your skin care professional for recommendations.

1 month prior - If you are nearing 30 or over and have started to see lines around your eyes or on your forehead, now is the time to start botox. This treatment will relax the muscles to reduce the look of lines and wrinkles. In fact, with proper placement, you can even get a visible lift in the eyebrows. The result will be smooth lifted skin.

The week of - Be sure to either schedule a facial this week or take some time to give yourself a home facial. The facial this week needs to be exfoliating and extra hydrating (this will help diminish any fine lines), and don’t forget to include your lips! Also, please sure your brows are groomed and the hair (if dark) is removed from your upper lip.

The night before - You will probably be tired and perhaps a tad overwhelmed on the night before your wedding, so I won’t give you too much homework. But the one thing I do want you to do is please be sure to wash your face that night. If you feel like going above and beyond that, you could sleep in a hydrating mask, or if your are broken out, use a spot treatment for the flare-ups.

And of course, throughout this process, stay hydrated and get plenty of sleep. For water consumption- you should be drinking half your body weight in ounces a day. Keep that mind in the days leading up to your wedding.

I would be happy to help coach you on skincare and point you in the right direction. Unfortunately, I no longer offer any skincare services, nor do I sell any skincare product. If you are a local I can personally recommend LUX~ a medical spa, located in Bluffton, SC.

Address: 350 Fording Island Rd #101, Okatie, SC 29909

And please tell them I sent you! Good Luck and remember “beautiful SKIN is always IN”

Fighting Humidity in the Lowcountry

Jessica Shefsick - Tuesday, September 16, 2014

The Lowcountry has a climate all of its own. During the summer months in particular, and even now in the fall, it’s hot, sticky and humid. This weather provides unique challenges in hair and makeup for a Lowcountry wedding. Never fear! That’s what Bride's Side Beauty Premier Bridal Makeup artists are here to do. We are trained experts in ensuring that your bridal hair and makeup stay perfect all day long and having done makeup in the Lowcountry for the last 4 years, we know special tips and tricks. The last thing you want is frizzy hair or a shinny face in your photos! We have you covered. Literally!

What’s a girl to do every day with her hair and makeup here? Here are 5 tips you can do every day to fight hair and makeup trials and tribulations in the Lowcountry!

  • Use blotting sheets. They are an inexpensive way to reduce shine on your face. Blot first then dust with a bit of powder.
  • Ditch your foundation and use a tinted moisturizer instead. It’s more sheer and won’t cake on your skin, leaving a more natural look.
  • Forget cream eye shadow and use powders instead.
  • Try anti-frizz serum for your hair.
  • After you blow dry your hair, use a finishing cream to keep smooth. Wrap your hair in a loose bun for several minutes, pull out and let the hair fall.  It will have a soft and natural wave and hold up better against humidity.
At Bride's Side Beauty Premier Bridal Makeup, we are trained experts in this field. You can feel confident that on the day of your wedding, your look will stand up to the Lowcountry weather!

Bridal Trial Prep & Expectations

Jessica Shefsick - Wednesday, September 10, 2014

What to Expect

How exciting! The time has come for you to try on your makeup look for your wedding day! The trial is a great way to establish that look! We want you to communicate how you want to look and walk out feeling confident about your day. We also want to make you feel confident in our abilities, skill and professionalism before the big day!

We’ll begin the trial by going over your skin type, how much makeup you’re comfortable wearing, colors you enjoy, and looking at pictures for inspiration. Once we’ve established a look that you will feel comfortable in, we’ll begin doing your makeup. (Fun fact — we usually only let you look twice while we are in the process! Once at the foundation and once after the eyes are complete. The finished product is SO much better.) After we have the entire look complete, we’ll give you the mirror and have you tell us exactly what you do and don’t like about the application. From there, we’ll make any adjustments as necessary. This is a great time to be critical. Don’t be shy!

Once we have the look perfected, we’ll take some glamour shots (pictures!) and write notes to help us recall everything discussed. This way, we will be able to recreate the look exactly the way you want us to on the day of your wedding!

What to bring

It’s encouraged to bring pictures of makeup you like. The pictures should be of makeup you have previously worn and feel the most beautiful in and found on Pinterest. We also recommend bringing pictures of your dress and jewelry you’re planning on wearing. If you have pictures of decorations or swatches of color you’ll be using for the ceremony or reception, those can be helpful as well! It’s great to establish a theme so the makeup you wear flows seamlessly with the overall vision and theme. The goal is to make everything look as put together as possible.

We also ask that you bring your own mascara (we like to use it straight from the tube) and your favorite lip colors. Many brides prefer to shop for their own lip color anyway, since they’ll need to apply it several times throughout the night. (If you forget, no big deal, we will have those items in our kit!)

We are here to walk you through every step of the way and make you feel comfortable! We can’t wait for your trial. If you have any questions before, be sure to let us know!

Wedding Day Prep

Jessica Shefsick - Tuesday, September 02, 2014

Preparing for your hair and makeup appointments on your wedding day!

Your big day is finally here! This once in a lifetime day that you have been dreaming about has arrived and since Bride’s Side Beauty Premier Makeup Artists has been a part of hundreds of weddings, we have a few tips for the day of your wedding. We also have everything you need to know about your hair and makeup appointment for the day of.

What time you are getting married, how many attendants you have and who’s getting their hair and makeup done will determine your hair and makeup start times. Bride’s Side Beauty professional team works to schedule your bridal party so everything runs smoothly and efficiently, no one is waiting around for too long and no one is rushed. It’s that perfect balance that we are so good at so leave this scheduling job to us! How it works: We get the dressed and ready time from either your photographer or your wedding planner. Once that time is set, we work backwards from there. Makeup should be the last thing that you do before you put your dress on. For example, if your ready time is 4:00, we will start makeup at 3:00, everyone else in your party will go before you.

What you do in the morning varies from bride to bride. We know some brides that like to do sunrise yoga, have breakfast with their bridesmaids, get a massage, take a spin class, or take a walk on the beach. Whatever you choose to do in the morning, make sure you have some time to breath, relax and reflect on your exciting day! Then make sure you have enough time to take a long shower, exfoliate your face and body, and shave.  If you didn’t work out in the morning, you may not want to wash your hair, particularly if you are doing an “up-do” as slightly dirty hair tends to work best. If you did sweat, be sure to wash your hair but do not use conditioner and then dry it completely. There’s no need to style, straighten or curl it since that’s what our hair professionals will do!

As far as makeup is concerned, you should not apply any makeup before you get your makeup done. We ask that you lightly moisturize your face and come clean faced and ready for makeup application. We’ll be ready for you!

We will arrive at least 15 minutes before the parties start time at your location. On most occasions, we are running early and love to stay ahead of schedule to keep everyone (including ourselves) feeling confident and relaxed about the wedding day timeline.

Wherever you are getting ready, we recommend bringing snacks, breakfast or lunch for your girls to munch on, some tunes on your iPhone or iPad, and some magazines. Thinking of your appointments as just a day of beauty at the spa with your friends will also help everyone relax.

Bride’s Side Beauty is happy to answer whatever questions you have about your wedding day makeup and hair appointments! We look forward to working with you on your wedding day!

Classic vs. Trends in Wedding Makeup

Jessica Shefsick - Tuesday, August 05, 2014

Classic vs. Trends in Makeup

At Bride's Side Beauty Premier Bridal Makeup, we love reading bridal magazines and websites. We often see “trends in makeup” or “what’s new in makeup” articles that are fun to read. But “trends” are not something that we usually follow when it comes to makeup in the bridal industry.

On the day of your wedding, we want you to look like you. We don’t want to give you a look that is radically different than what you are used to, or that won’t be in style years from now when you are looking back at your wedding photos. Rather, it’s a classic, best version of you look that we know you will love.

With all of our reading, all of our continuing education attending trade shows and conferences, we look to learn what’s new in products, in application, and we take note of trends for a fun night out on the town. But at your bridal trial and on the day of the wedding, you can be sure that our premier makeup artists are using classic looks that are tried and true.  And you’ll get a makeup look that’s completely you.

With a professional makeup application for your wedding day by Bride's Side Beauty, you are sure to be getting the very best in premier makeup that gives a classic, natural look. Take a look at some of our classic bridal makeup here! To learn more about our services, browse our website and look at our gallery of photos!
