Extensions

Jessica Shefsick - Sunday, February 05, 2017

You asked and we listened...

We are excited to announce that we now offer 18' and 20' real human hair clip-in extensions! These high quality extensions are 120 grams of hair with 8 individual panels. Incorporating these  extensions with your own hair will give your wedding day style more volume, texture and depth, in addition to longer length if you choose to wear your hair down.

Your color choices are: blonde, dirty blonde, strawberry blonde, light brown and chocolate. Black and gray may be special ordered upon request. And if needed, the extensions can be dyed to match any hair color.

Care and Maintenance of Clip In Hair Extensions:

  • Use styling tools on low heat, be careful not to pull too hard while extensions are attached.
  • Dry shampoo may be used in between washings.
  • Once the hair becomes dull and product begins to build up, it's time to shampoo.

Steps to Shampoo:

  • Gently brush out all tangles with a looper brush
  • Wet the hair and begin to shampoo using a gentle sulfate free formula
  • Use a small amount of conditioner or leave in conditioner to reduce tangles
  • Blot extensions with a towel and allow to air dry
  • If you need your extensions to dry in a hurry, you may use a hair dryer. Always use a heat protectant to prevent damage.

Be sure to store your extensions neatly in the silk bag provided or hang them with a pants hanger. This will reduce matting and keep them looking great for years to come!

How to choose Accessories

Jessica Shefsick - Tuesday, August 30, 2016

Your dress is surely the centerpiece when it comes to your desired wedding day look. At a close second, is your hair and makeup (in our opinion). And coming in third, are your accessories. It is important to keep in mind that your accessories do play a role in your overall look, and choosing them carefully is absolutely crucial.

How to do that? We have some tips for you – so read on and find out more.

  • First of all, look at the color of your dress. In general, it is advisable to match warm-colored gowns with yellow gold jewelry and cool-colored dresses with silver or white gold. For example, a champagne wedding dress will look gorgeous with yellow gold accessories.
  • Furthermore, consider whether or not you will be wearing a wedding veil. This can have a huge influence on how you choose your accessories too! If you do want to wear a veil, be sure your jewelry is not too overpowering or too ornate. This will help you create a well-balanced look, and it will help you stay safe from having your jewelry entangled in the veil too.
  • Last, but definitely not least, think of your wedding gowns neckline. Sweetheart necklines look best with large, statement necklaces, straight necklines look best with simple pieces (such as strings of pearls), scooped necklines are gorgeous with pendant necklaces, while high and asymmetrical necklines tend to look best without any kind of necklace (just a beautiful pair of earrings).

Guide To Getting Ready

Jessica Shefsick - Tuesday, August 09, 2016

As a seasoned wedding professional with over 450 weddings now under my belt, I'm proud to say I've learned a few things over the years. And since most of you are doing this "wedding thing" for the very first time, I would love to give you some advice that only comes from experience. As a makeup artist, my expertise is in the "getting ready" portion of wedding the day. Sure, everyone knows the order of operations for the wedding; walk down the aisle, get hitched, celebrate and make a grand exit. But what happens before all that fabulousness? Here is my advice for how it should all go down.

Ladies (assuming you will be getting ready with your wedding party in one location prior to the wedding)

  • Have plenty of food and drink. If you're getting married in the early afternoon plan to have breakfast available for the party. If it's an evening wedding , be sure to have lunch available. Either make the food ahead of time or have the food catered in. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO COOK! Too messy, too much commotion, and too stressful. Do have light cocktails available for those who want to settle nerves and make sure everyone is drinking plenty of water. (Insider Tip: Offering food and drink to the wedding vendors that are hard at work, is always appreciated).
  • Hire a professional makeup and hair team! Not only will you look amazing, but have you ever thought about a bunch of ladies all trying to squeeze into one bathroom to use the mirror and curling irons? Yeah, not pretty. In fact, when I got married, all of my bridesmaids were using the only mirror in our one bed one bath apartment, while I was in the kitchen using my compact to do my own makeup (try applying false lashes with an one inch mirror). In hiring a team for makeup and hair you and your Bridal party can be getting ready simultaneously while others chat, eat, and tend to last minute details. Not only that, but since professionals come with everything that's needed to make you look your very best, your party won't have to bring their luggage to where you'll be getting ready. (Insider Tip: Your hired professionals have trade secrets to help keep you looking great all the way to the grand exit.)
  • While the hair and makeup is taking place, think about having something to do for your party while they're waiting. Have magazines laying around and/or show a classic romantic comedy in the background. You know, the one you and your girls know by heart. (Insider Tip: I find having a room full of people with nothing to do, brings up the anxiety level. You want people feeling relaxed, not pacing the floor). And speaking of relaxed, be sure if you choose to have music in the background, it's something fairly relaxing as well. Not that you need to play spa music, but please, no techno or loud high energy dance music. While this may seem fun, it increases the energy level which can lead to anxiety. You will have plenty of time to dance later. It's a long day, lets pace ourselves.
  • To know when you should start getting ready you need your dressed and ready time, which usually comes from your photographer or wedding planner. Makeup is the last thing you do before putting on your gown. For example, if your ready time is 4:00, you will start makeup at 3:00 and count backwards from there to get your start time.
  • If you and your fiancé plan to give gifts or cards prior to the ceremony, please plan on exchanging in the morning or before makeup at least. You wouldn't want to cry after hair and makeup, or have puffy eyes walking down the aisle. Food for thought.
  • And last but certainly not least, my most favorite tip of all: Spend a few moments with your Dad or the person you chose to give you away. Chances are he has graciously hosted the event, and sadly he is usually the one who gets the least of your attention. Find time before the ceremony to tell him how you feel, you won't regret it. (Insider Tip: Tell your photographer ahead of time, Kodak that moment!)
Men
  • Eat, s#*!, shower and shave. Start this process about 30 minutes before "suiting up". That's it! Ahhh.... to be a man.

I feel so honored that I get one on one time with the Bride right before she walks down the aisle. And I will tell you what I tell each Bride that sits in my chair who is just minutes away from starting the wedding of her dreams. Sit, Relax, Reflect and Breathe.

Much Love! -Jess

Karina Smirnoff comes to Bluffton!

Jessica Shefsick - Monday, July 18, 2016

Author:  | Photographer: Krisztian Lonyai

As we gather at The Fred Astaire Dance Studios in Bluffton, there is a feeling of excitement in the air. It is 8 p.m. on a Friday, and we are poised to photograph the Ukrainian-born American dancer and five-time U.S. National Ballroom Champion, Karina Smirnoff, for a fashion spread in CH2 magazine.

Smirnoff shot to stardom on the immensely popular show Dancing with the Stars, and, several years and seasons later, she has emerged as one of its most recognizable and respected talents. The Season-13 winner has used her talent and reputation to cultivate her own incredibly successful brand, which, in recent years, has seen her branch out to include her own workout videos, clothing lines and dance workshops.

As time goes by, I notice those around me nervously checking and rechecking that we are set. Kim Malloy (our stylist) is rolling over the clothes again and again, and Jessica Shefsick (our makeup artist) is repeatedly checking through her brushes to ensure we are ready for Smirnoff’s arrival.

Ever in demand, Smirnoff has already spent the last three days teaching, but her passion for her craft continues to attract the attention of her students, who flock around her like moths around a flame. As the last student leaves, Smirnoff finally arrives and dashes into makeup. It is 10 p.m., yet the talented beauty is still very much at work, busily answering text messages regarding a charity event she is supporting on the West Coast, despite being 14 hours into her working day. She is shorter than I had imagined, obviously in great shape, but actually even more beautiful in person. Sandro, the dance studio’s main instructor follows and whispers to me in Hungarian that I better hurry. Smirnoff is understandably exhausted, so I quickly make the final adjustments to the lighting and music as she settles into the session. As I go, I notice everyone quickly warming to the dancer, who is busily sharing stories about her life growing up in New York and how her love of dance has taken her all over the world.

Less than an hour later, and despite a feverishly quick progression through styling and makeup, Smirnoff is camera-ready and makes her way onto the set, having charmed and mesmerized the team around her just as she had her students earlier in the day.

With time now against us, any worries about tiredness are obliterated as Smirnoff begins to pose. She looks stunningly impeccable! Her enthusiasm, focus and energy is contagious, and she is truly here full-throttle. As I click my camera, Smirnoff responds to every adjustment I require, and within moments, I, too, am mesmerized by this Ukrainian beauty. As with the attention she gives to her dancing, it appears Smirnoff is a perfectionist in every regard.

As the clock passes midnight, Smirnoff exits the set to change her clothes, while Malloy, Shefsick and I contemplate how tired she must be and reluctantly consider suggesting we should finish up and wrap. As I steal myself away to thank Smirnoff, I notice that she’s coming back to the set; and to our surprise, she is, once again, ready for makeup and a hair change. In no time, she’s back on set, posing, smiling and cracking jokes, seemingly as fresh as when she arrived hours before.

Finally, a little after 1:30 a.m., we’re finished! Smirnoff takes time to thank everyone for their hard work, and I see their smiles and appreciation. It’s been a long couple of days for us all, but most of all for Smirnoff, who tells us that she is flying to London later in the day to share her love for dance with her British fans. The lady certainly has the energy for it.

By Your Side

Jessica Shefsick - Monday, November 09, 2015

In the midst of our re-brand this past spring, I got to thinking about how else we could improve. What else could we do for our lovely Brides? How else could we make their day even better? With all of our experience, there must be something else we could bring to the table. Why leave after we finish hair and makeup when we could stay and help? We could assist the Bride and her party with all things wedding, not just makeup and hair. After all, we have been a part of over 350 weddings, that experience could be so helpful! And that is why the By Your Side package was created, which is now our most popular service. Before the unveiling I made certain my team was fully trained and ready to assist the Bride in all things wedding. I got the BSB team together and we trained with the experts in the area of male styling like tying ties and bow ties and folding pocket squares. We met with a gown expert to learn how to bustle and fasten all types of gowns. We met with a floral expert to learn how to put together and pin a boutonniere as well as what to do if the bouquets needs help. I wanted my team to know it all so that we could better serve a bride.

With a By your side package we can help with just about any task. For instance, cleaning up the getting ready location, pouring and serving drinks, popping champagne, zipping gowns, running a quick errand, and of course, touch ups of hair and makeup as well a second look for the bride for the reception.

Really anything needed to make the day more enjoyable is what we'll do.

On August 22, 2015 we completed our first By Your Side Package with Meghan Gagorik. Here is our story-.

From the makeup artsit-"I tell Brides, when you book a by your side package you are really booking hair, makeup and personal assistants for the day. And that is exactly what Meghan got! After the hair and makeup services were completed Meghan went for her first look while we stayed back and cleaned up the cottage and prepared for the on site activity. After the first look, Erica and I were waiting there to tend to whatever she needed. At that time, it was drinks! So, Erica and I went to a nearby bar and gathered each girl her drink of choice and delivered it promptly. It was at about that time that a huge storm blew in and reaped havoc on the couple’s outdoor cocktail set up. While the wedding planner quickly orchestrated plan B, we stayed by the Bride's side. Erica re-curled everyone's hair, I touched up makeup, and we all shared our stories of rain on our wedding day (well in my case it was a blizzard), we even went to fetch 5 umbrellas for the party so they could walk covered to the chapel. Once the storm died down, we then held the Brides dress all the way to the chapel to avoid soiling the bottom of the gown. After the wedding we saw the Bride again for quick second look change of hair and makeup before heading to her reception. During the look change we gave her and her bouquet a much-needed drink of water. We hugged goodbye, and mutually agreed that parting at this point was difficult. After all, we had been by her side all day!! On my way home, I felt such joy in a job well done and gratified that I had made the right decision in offering this unique service to our Brides. We are honored to be By Your Side!" – Jessica Shefsick, Makeup Artist and owner of Brides Side Beauty

From the hair stylist- "Today was a great day! I got to spend the full day with my bride and her wedding party and let me just say it's awesome to be such a special part of a brides day. It poured rain and then the sun came out right as they exchanged vows, I couldn't help but be happy for her. What was even better was when I did her second look for her hair, she teared up saying her now husbands parents passed away during the wedding planning, and then a huge vibrant rainbow appeared right beside them as they took their pictures. They couldn't help but feel his parent’s presence with them on their special day. God is good all of the time! Thank you for allowing me to be a part of your special day" - Erica Reynolds, Hair Stylist for BSB

From the Bride- "Absolutely wonderful in every way!! I loved all of mine and my girls' hair and makeup. Jessica and Erica were so kind and sweet. I loved spending such an important day with such great people. I was actually sad when I was going into reception and they were leaving because I felt like they were such an important part of everything that day. Thank you so much for being by this bride’s side."

– Meghan Gagorik, Bride

Magic Happened

Jessica Shefsick - Wednesday, October 21, 2015

Though I have never met Lindsey Carter, founder and designer of Troubadour Clothing, I know we have a lot in common. As a wife, mother and business owner like myself, I know she has her hands full. This southern based fashion designer may be busy, but she is also very successful, which I find synonymous with most women today.

Over the summer I had the privilege to work on a fashion shoot featuring  the beautiful and unique clothing from this "designer to watch". The backdrop was the breathtaking and serene Palmetto Bluff located in the heart of South Carolina's  LowCountry. The photographer was the talented fashion photographer Krisztian Lonyai. Hair and makeup was provided by myself and Erica Reynolds of Bride's Side Beauty. And when all of these talents combined along with the pure beauty of Palmetto Bluff, magic happened. I know the purpose of this shoot was too showcase Lindsey's beautiful artful clothing but, there is just so much beauty in each shot, I cannot keep my eyes in one place. I hope you agree.

Enjoy these images by Krisztian Lonyai. Shop Lindsey's line at shop.troubadourclothing.com.

Special thanks  to Anna Jones of Palmetto Bluff and The Bluff Magazine for letting us be a part of this beautiful shoot.

How to wear dark lipstick

Jessica Shefsick - Friday, September 25, 2015

Take a walk on the dark side

Happy fall y’all! It’s that time of the year again when you pull out the sweaters, get your long awaited pumpkin spice latte, and spend more time snuggling up than going out. But let’s step out of our comfort zone this fall and add a different kind of spice into our life. We’re talking about running and grabbing some dark shades of lip color and rocking them with those sweaters and pumpkin spice lattes.

Before you get too excited and buy every shade of dark lip color out there, check out some of our easy tips and tricks for this fall must have!

1: Select the right shade

Just like everyone can’t pull off skinny jeans or a certain color top, one must pick the right color of lip to compliment their skin tone. If you have fair skin, it’s best to go for something with a pink base to highlight your eyes, while a richer color for darker skin tones will look best.

2: Play up one feature at a time

When wearing a dark lip, go for a soft eye with some eyeliner, and a light pink or simple bronzer on the cheeks. Keep the focus in the right place!

3: Use a lip pencil to outline

Using a lip pencil before applying the lipstick will help keep it from feathering out. Get a color that is the same shade or a shade darker for a flawless blend.

4: “Check yourself before you wreck yourself”

Remember when wearing any lip color, especially dark, to check your teeth for smudging. A quick tip to prevent any embarrassing grins is to blot your lips with some Kleenex or tissue paper and get any excess color off. If you happen to get color on the inside of your lips, grab a tissue and wrap it around a finger, pop it in your mouth with your lips tight around your finger, then pull it out. Any color that would have gotten on your teeth will be on the tissue and you’ll be worry free!

5: Always bring some backup

For quick touch ups make sure you bring your lip color with you! And to prevent having to do a lot of them, take small bites when eating and drink through straws.

BONUS TIP!

For a flawless dark lip, use a lip brush to apply it evenly; Start from the corners of the mouth and work inwards. For a richer, longer lasting lip, apply the color twice and blot between applications.

Now you are ready to take to those dark lips out with confidence and make every girl want to run home and put theirs on, and every guy wishing he could be the one kissing them!

Skinzin Gets A Makeover

Jessica Shefsick - Tuesday, June 02, 2015

We have recently completed our biggest makeover to date! We have unveiled a fresh, new face for Skinzin. What began in 2010 as a part-time solo pursuit has grown into a team of seven working on over 100 weddings a year! With this growth in business and the team of professionals, I knew that the time had come to rename the business with a name that defined our brand in the marketplace. We are excited to be growing up and becoming even better. What does this mean for brides? A new, easy-to-navigate, responsive website filled with a gallery of photos, a menu of services and a new logo. And of course, with any good re-brand we needed the perfect name.

Skinzin has been smartly renamed Bride's Side Beauty simply because it tells our story. Brides are now requesting "second looks" for their receptions and have a desire to have their beauty team "by their side" the entire day. We can assist with the little details such as tying the groomsmen's ties, sewing a button or simply touching up the bridal party. We offer our  "By Your Side" bridal packages for small or large bridal parties that cater to all budgets.

We listened to our past brides and we are pleased to be able to improve for you, our future client.

We'd like to thank all of our past clients for helping us on this journey. You have paved the way for our future brides. We are dedicated to providing superior services based on the clients' needs. Bride's Side Beauty specializes in on location makeup and hair. We look forward to creating beautiful moments with you. And please, "Always look at the bride's side!"

My Passion, Our Cause

Jessica Shefsick - Thursday, January 01, 2015

As a small business owner and a human on this planet, I feel a responsibility in helping to make the world a better place. I could contribute to this effort in infinite ways, and maybe I will. But today, New Years Day 2015, I am committing to reducing waste. Americans make more than 200 million tons of garbage each year, enough to fill Busch Stadium from top to bottom twice a day. And where do you think all this garbage goes? That’s right, a landfill near your home. Landfills are toxic and have been linked to increased risks of certain types of cancer, including bladder, brain and leukemia. Furthermore, a study by researchers at the London School of Hygiene and Medicine also found that babies born to mothers who live near landfills have a greater risk of birth defects. Health reasons aside, wouldn’t you choose fresh clean land for play and exploration as opposed to toxic wastelands? I would.

As the population grows, our need for more landfills increases. But, it doesn’t have to. We need to wake up to simple waste reduction and being responsible for the waste we create. Think about what we take and what we buy. Will it end up in landfill? If so, is it necessary? The answer is usually no, it is not necessary. No we don’t need that happy meal toy, no we don’t need the free koozie or rubber bracelet, no we don’t need Styrofoam under our fruits and vegetables wrapped in plastic (this is absurd), and no we don’t need to use disposable dishes (just wash the dish)! Disposables were invented in the 1950’s for the overworked housewife that desperately needed a break from washing dishes once in a while. Fast forward 65 years. Everything now comes in a “convenient” disposable. And this “convenience” is where the carelessness began.

Now for someone who is obsessed with waste like me, it is awful to think about my business and how much waste we as an industry produce. Think about going into Ulta or Sephora, look around, everything will eventually end up in a landfill. Lipsticks, mascaras, lotions and potions. All of these items get used and pitched, so sad. So again, in an effort to reduce waste, myself and my team will be using TerraCyle.com to upcylce all of our used cosmetics starting 1/1/15. TerraCycle is a company on a mission to eliminate the idea of waste. They do this by creating waste collection programs (each one is called a “Brigade”) for previously non-recyclable, or difficult-to-recycle, waste. The collected waste is then converted into new products, ranging from recycled park benches to upcycled backpacks. With great joy, Bride’s Side Beauty is now a part of the personal care and beauty brigade with Terracyle and can accept any of the following items for upcylcying.

  • Hair care packaging such as shampoo and conditioner bottles, non aerosol sprays, and hair paste jars.
  • Skin care packaging such as lip balm tubes, face soap dispensers, lotion bottles or tubes.
  • Cosmetics packaging such as lipstick cases, lip gloss tubes, mascara tubes, eye shadow cases, foundation packaging, powder cases, eyeliner, concealer and lipsticks.

You can bring any of these items to our studio and we will gladly send them to be upcyled on your behalf.

I pledge to be environmentally responsible in my business and in my home. In 2015 myself and my family will also start composting our food waste, while continuing to recycle. In addition to these efforts, I also volunteer with a local non-profit group called Experience Green, whose mission is sustainability. I hope my passion for the environment inspires you, or at least makes you think.

Here’s to a better tomorrow and a wonderful 2015, Cheers! -Jess
