Hair Training with North American Hair Stylist of the
Year, Danielle Keasling @danielle.keasling

Jessica Shefsick - Thursday, March 28, 2019

As a Licensed Esthetics Instructor of over 10 years, education and following proper procedure are two things that are very important to me! I am a natural manager and have held leader/ training positions my entire adult life. Because of my background, I know how important education and training are to a team and ultimately to the clients.

This month, I hosted an advanced education training session benefiting my hair team with North American Hair Stylist of the Year, Danielle Keasling. At this training we went over lots of tricks and tips along with our Bride’s most requested styles. By having Danielle there in person, she was able to give the team hands on help when needed and offer on-the-spot instruction. Danielle generously shared her extensive knowledge and know-how, we were all blown away by her skill and grace.

As the client, someone that is giving us their hard-earned money in exchange for a superb service, I’d like for you to know how I invest that money so that a superb service is ensured. I pay my contractors very well (that’s how I get them to stay for 9+ years) and I spend money to educate my team. Investing in my team + my business = happy clients!

Thank you for your business!

All the best, Jess

Mobile Spray Tanning

Jessica Shefsick - Thursday, January 31, 2019

We’re Excited to announce our newest service, Mobile Spray Tanning!

In this new service we will be using Norvell professional spray tanning products. We chose Norvell not only because they are the largest manufacturer of spray tanning products in the world, but also because their solution gives that just off the beach color, every time! Perfect for our coastal clients.

Mobile Spray Tanning will be offered to our Bride’s Side Beauty clients only, no outside appointments will be taken. This exclusivity will allow the sought-after Thursday appointment, to be available for our Bride’s and their maids. We hereby declare Thursdays Tan Days!

Plan on making your appointment about 4-6 weeks prior to the wedding. Times will be first come first serve. Even though we are reserving tanning for BSB clients only, we are expecting about 2-3 groups every Thursday. Pricing can be found on the Rates page of our website.

Here is what to expect and instructions for the tanning process:

24 hours Prior to Tan

  • Exfoliate the body
  • Shave without shaving cream
  • Do not use moisturizers or deodorant
(If you do not feel comfortable skipping shaving cream, moisturizer and/or deodorant 24 hours prior to the tan, you can wash your body from such products right before the tan appointment.)

Day of Tan

  • Wear dark loose fitting clothing to the appointment and flip flops
  • Come free of moisturizer, deodorant and makeup
  • Remove all jewelry
  • During the tan dress at you comfort level. Options are: totally nude, thong bottom and no top, top and bottom such as a bikini (please bring your own).

Post Tan

  • Do not get wet for at least 12 hours
  • In your first shower post tan, you should not shave or use soap/shower gel. Just use plain water to rinse your skin using your hands to wash away the bronzer.

The Norvell solution is formulated with cosmetic bronzers for an instant result, leaving you looking bronze upon completion. Your tan will develop in as little as 4 hours and will last up 7 days. Again, we are so excited to be offering this new service to our Bride’s. We know most of us feel a little sexier with a sun kissed glow, and since we are in the business of Bridal Beauty, this was a perfect complement to our wedding day services. Hope you enjoy! See y’all on Thursday!

All the best, Jess

Body Maintenance Schedule for Brides-To-Be

Jessica Shefsick - Saturday, June 30, 2018

The following "Body Maintenance" schedule is a guideline for Brides-to-be wanting to look radiant on their wedding day. I realize the amount of work below is comparable to a full-time job, but the point is to pick and choose what's important to you, and of course what your time and budget allow. The three things I would not skip are skincare, teeth whitening, and brow grooming. Those three are essential to a flawless face. Now get to work!

BODY. If you don’t exercise already, now is the time to start a regular exercise routine, even if it’s only walking 30 minutes three to five days a week. The increased heart rate along with the oxygen intake is essential for body and skin health.
HAIR. If your goal is to have beautiful flowing tresses or an intricate “up do,” start growing your hair out now. Tip: take a biotin supplement for an extra boost.
SKIN. Start on a professional skin care routine. This routine should be for your personal skin type and condition(s). If you’re not sure what skin type you are or what conditions need to be treated, you should see an esthetician for a full skin analysis. Your skincare routine should include:

  • Cleanse (preferably with a Clarisonic® or similar device)
  • Tone
  • Serum (to correct or repair)
  • Moisturize or Hydrate with SPF

  • Exfoliate
  • Mask

SKIN. Start a monthly or bi-monthly professional facial routine.

SKIN. If you have specific skin concerns such as hyperpigmentation (brown spots) or acne, this is a good time to start a series of chemical peels to help correct those issues.
HAIR. For healthy, shiny hair, a deep conditioning treatment with scalp massage can be done monthly from here on out.
Schedule a professional teeth cleaning.

TEETH. Time to whiten! Depending on your method, getting your teeth a few shades whiter could take up to a month.

HAIR. Schedule a trim to remove the dead ends, and if you color or highlight, go ahead and freshen that up as well.
SKIN. Be sure to either schedule a facial this week or take some time to give yourself a home facial. The facial this week needs to be exfoliating and extra hydrating (this will help diminish any fine lines), and don’t forget to include your lips!
BROWS. See a brow specialists to groom and shape your eyebrows, and if you have dark hair on your upper lip, be sure that is removed as well.
NAILS. Mani/pedi this week, yay! Go with the gel for major longevity.

BODY. This is the best time to get your spray tan. Remember, the day before you spray tan, exfoliate your entire body with a granular scrub, shave, and then follow with a body cream. The day of your tan, it’s best to go with clean unmoisturized skin.

You will probably be tired and perhaps a tad overwhelmed on the night before your wedding, so I won’t give you too much homework. But the one thing I do want you to do is please be sure to wash your face that night. If you feel like going above and beyond that, you could sleep in a hydrating mask, or if you are broken out, use a spot treatment for the flare-ups.

And of course, throughout this process, stay hydrated and get plenty of sleep. In terms of water consumption, you should be drinking half your body weight in ounces a day. Keep this mind in on the days leading up to your wedding.

The Advantages of Airbrush Makeup

Jessica Shefsick - Thursday, April 19, 2018

We frequently get asked if airbrush is the only option for foundation with our makeup services. Our response is always, “you wouldn’t want anything else”, so why give another option? We know that using airbrush foundation will give the absolute best result for the wedding day and here are 7 reasons why:

  1. It’s water resistant which means it’s resistant to sweat (hello hot south) and tears (it is wedding after all).
  2. It’s transfer resistant which means it won’t rub off on other people’s clothes when hugging.
  3. It feels light yet can be full coverage. We can give you light sheer coverage, medium or full coverage based on how many “passes” we do during the application. If you like it light and natural, allowing your skin to show through, we may do just 1-2 passes. If you like a full coverage opaque look, we’ll do a few more. Everybody’s happy!
  4. Custom colors! We custom blend EVERY SINGLE foundation color just for you and you party.
  5. It’s a filler! The formula we use contains 60% silicone which helps to fill in lines, pores and imperfections.
  6. All Day Wear. We guarantee 10 hours, but our clients say it lasts for 12!
  7. Looks flawless in photos! The spray dot-pattern of the airbrush blurs the appearance of the skin, resulting in a flawless face on camera.

Although, I do not demand any certain brands in the makeup artist’s kits (stipulations are professional and prestige), most carry Temptu Pro SB. The SB stands for silicone base.

Hope this helps! All the best, Jess

The Visual Hair Menu

Jessica Shefsick - Friday, October 13, 2017

Introducing our New Visual Hair Menu!

I have recently created a menu for our clients to build their own hair style from, a “build your own burger” type concept. It starts with the style- You can choose to wear your hair all up, down, half up half down or a pony tail. Next, you pick your texture; straight, wavy or curly. Then choose the position of style, this applies to all styles except all down. And finally, decide on your part placement and if you want to add a braid or tendrils to your style. With this menu, there are literally hundreds of different creations! This new tool enables our clients to better communicate their likes to the stylist. Consequently, the stylist is able to create a style unique to the individual instead of trying to re-create a style seen on Pinterest or elsewhere. The new menu is also proving itself to be a very handy training tool for our up incoming stylists, making it easier for both the teacher and the student to communicate. This fall is the introduction of using our new menu. And If all goes well, and we believe it will, we’ll be creating a makeup menu in spring 2018. We are super excited about our new menu idea and hope you can see how we are striving to be exceptional in every way. We are different, we are better and we are worth it!

Jessica Shefsick - Sunday, February 05, 2017

You asked and we listened...

We are excited to announce that we now offer 18' and 20' real human hair clip-in extensions! These high quality extensions are 120 grams of hair with 8 individual panels. Incorporating these  extensions with your own hair will give your wedding day style more volume, texture and depth, in addition to longer length if you choose to wear your hair down.

Your color choices are: blonde, dirty blonde, strawberry blonde, light brown and chocolate. Black and gray may be special ordered upon request. And if needed, the extensions can be dyed to match any hair color.

Care and Maintenance of Clip In Hair Extensions:

  • Use styling tools on low heat, be careful not to pull too hard while extensions are attached.
  • Dry shampoo may be used in between washings.
  • Once the hair becomes dull and product begins to build up, it's time to shampoo.

Steps to Shampoo:

  • Gently brush out all tangles with a looper brush
  • Wet the hair and begin to shampoo using a gentle sulfate free formula
  • Use a small amount of conditioner or leave in conditioner to reduce tangles
  • Blot extensions with a towel and allow to air dry
  • If you need your extensions to dry in a hurry, you may use a hair dryer. Always use a heat protectant to prevent damage.

Be sure to store your extensions neatly in the silk bag provided or hang them with a pants hanger. This will reduce matting and keep them looking great for years to come!

How to choose Accessories

Jessica Shefsick - Tuesday, August 30, 2016

Your dress is surely the centerpiece when it comes to your desired wedding day look. At a close second, is your hair and makeup (in our opinion). And coming in third, are your accessories. It is important to keep in mind that your accessories do play a role in your overall look, and choosing them carefully is absolutely crucial.

How to do that? We have some tips for you – so read on and find out more.

  • First of all, look at the color of your dress. In general, it is advisable to match warm-colored gowns with yellow gold jewelry and cool-colored dresses with silver or white gold. For example, a champagne wedding dress will look gorgeous with yellow gold accessories.
  • Furthermore, consider whether or not you will be wearing a wedding veil. This can have a huge influence on how you choose your accessories too! If you do want to wear a veil, be sure your jewelry is not too overpowering or too ornate. This will help you create a well-balanced look, and it will help you stay safe from having your jewelry entangled in the veil too.
  • Last, but definitely not least, think of your wedding gowns neckline. Sweetheart necklines look best with large, statement necklaces, straight necklines look best with simple pieces (such as strings of pearls), scooped necklines are gorgeous with pendant necklaces, while high and asymmetrical necklines tend to look best without any kind of necklace (just a beautiful pair of earrings).

Here, at Bride’s Side Beauty, we are more than just hair and makeup. We are a team of true professionals always learning and finding ways to improve ourselves within the wedding community. We are a group of talented hairstylists and makeup artists ready to go above and beyond to make sure our brides look flawless on their Big Day. Guide To Getting Ready

Jessica Shefsick - Tuesday, August 09, 2016

As a seasoned wedding professional with over 450 weddings now under my belt, I'm proud to say I've learned a few things over the years. And since most of you are doing this "wedding thing" for the very first time, I would love to give you some advice that only comes from experience. As a makeup artist, my expertise is in the "getting ready" portion of wedding the day. Sure, everyone knows the order of operations for the wedding; walk down the aisle, get hitched, celebrate and make a grand exit. But what happens before all that fabulousness? Here is my advice for how it should all go down.

Ladies (assuming you will be getting ready with your wedding party in one location prior to the wedding)

  • Have plenty of food and drink. If you're getting married in the early afternoon plan to have breakfast available for the party. If it's an evening wedding , be sure to have lunch available. Either make the food ahead of time or have the food catered in. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO COOK! Too messy, too much commotion, and too stressful. Do have light cocktails available for those who want to settle nerves and make sure everyone is drinking plenty of water. (Insider Tip: Offering food and drink to the wedding vendors that are hard at work, is always appreciated).
  • Hire a professional makeup and hair team! Not only will you look amazing, but have you ever thought about a bunch of ladies all trying to squeeze into one bathroom to use the mirror and curling irons? Yeah, not pretty. In fact, when I got married, all of my bridesmaids were using the only mirror in our one bed one bath apartment, while I was in the kitchen using my compact to do my own makeup (try applying false lashes with an one inch mirror). In hiring a team for makeup and hair you and your Bridal party can be getting ready simultaneously while others chat, eat, and tend to last minute details. Not only that, but since professionals come with everything that's needed to make you look your very best, your party won't have to bring their luggage to where you'll be getting ready. (Insider Tip: Your hired professionals have trade secrets to help keep you looking great all the way to the grand exit.)
  • While the hair and makeup is taking place, think about having something to do for your party while they're waiting. Have magazines laying around and/or show a classic romantic comedy in the background. You know, the one you and your girls know by heart. (Insider Tip: I find having a room full of people with nothing to do, brings up the anxiety level. You want people feeling relaxed, not pacing the floor). And speaking of relaxed, be sure if you choose to have music in the background, it's something fairly relaxing as well. Not that you need to play spa music, but please, no techno or loud high energy dance music. While this may seem fun, it increases the energy level which can lead to anxiety. You will have plenty of time to dance later. It's a long day, lets pace ourselves.
  • To know when you should start getting ready you need your dressed and ready time, which usually comes from your photographer or wedding planner. Makeup is the last thing you do before putting on your gown. For example, if your ready time is 4:00, you will start makeup at 3:00 and count backwards from there to get your start time.
  • If you and your fiancé plan to give gifts or cards prior to the ceremony, please plan on exchanging in the morning or before makeup at least. You wouldn't want to cry after hair and makeup, or have puffy eyes walking down the aisle. Food for thought.
  • And last but certainly not least, my most favorite tip of all: Spend a few moments with your Dad or the person you chose to give you away. Chances are he has graciously hosted the event, and sadly he is usually the one who gets the least of your attention. Find time before the ceremony to tell him how you feel, you won't regret it. (Insider Tip: Tell your photographer ahead of time, Kodak that moment!)
  • Eat, s#*!, shower and shave. Start this process about 30 minutes before "suiting up". That's it! Ahhh.... to be a man.

I feel so honored that I get one on one time with the Bride right before she walks down the aisle. And I will tell you what I tell each Bride that sits in my chair who is just minutes away from starting the wedding of her dreams. Sit, Relax, Reflect and Breathe.

Much Love! -Jess

Karina Smirnoff comes to Bluffton!

Jessica Shefsick - Monday, July 18, 2016

Author:  | Photographer: Krisztian Lonyai

As we gather at The Fred Astaire Dance Studios in Bluffton, there is a feeling of excitement in the air. It is 8 p.m. on a Friday, and we are poised to photograph the Ukrainian-born American dancer and five-time U.S. National Ballroom Champion, Karina Smirnoff, for a fashion spread in CH2 magazine.

Smirnoff shot to stardom on the immensely popular show Dancing with the Stars, and, several years and seasons later, she has emerged as one of its most recognizable and respected talents. The Season-13 winner has used her talent and reputation to cultivate her own incredibly successful brand, which, in recent years, has seen her branch out to include her own workout videos, clothing lines and dance workshops.

As time goes by, I notice those around me nervously checking and rechecking that we are set. Kim Malloy (our stylist) is rolling over the clothes again and again, and Jessica Shefsick (our makeup artist) is repeatedly checking through her brushes to ensure we are ready for Smirnoff’s arrival.

Ever in demand, Smirnoff has already spent the last three days teaching, but her passion for her craft continues to attract the attention of her students, who flock around her like moths around a flame. As the last student leaves, Smirnoff finally arrives and dashes into makeup. It is 10 p.m., yet the talented beauty is still very much at work, busily answering text messages regarding a charity event she is supporting on the West Coast, despite being 14 hours into her working day. She is shorter than I had imagined, obviously in great shape, but actually even more beautiful in person. Sandro, the dance studio’s main instructor follows and whispers to me in Hungarian that I better hurry. Smirnoff is understandably exhausted, so I quickly make the final adjustments to the lighting and music as she settles into the session. As I go, I notice everyone quickly warming to the dancer, who is busily sharing stories about her life growing up in New York and how her love of dance has taken her all over the world.

Less than an hour later, and despite a feverishly quick progression through styling and makeup, Smirnoff is camera-ready and makes her way onto the set, having charmed and mesmerized the team around her just as she had her students earlier in the day.

With time now against us, any worries about tiredness are obliterated as Smirnoff begins to pose. She looks stunningly impeccable! Her enthusiasm, focus and energy is contagious, and she is truly here full-throttle. As I click my camera, Smirnoff responds to every adjustment I require, and within moments, I, too, am mesmerized by this Ukrainian beauty. As with the attention she gives to her dancing, it appears Smirnoff is a perfectionist in every regard.

As the clock passes midnight, Smirnoff exits the set to change her clothes, while Malloy, Shefsick and I contemplate how tired she must be and reluctantly consider suggesting we should finish up and wrap. As I steal myself away to thank Smirnoff, I notice that she’s coming back to the set; and to our surprise, she is, once again, ready for makeup and a hair change. In no time, she’s back on set, posing, smiling and cracking jokes, seemingly as fresh as when she arrived hours before.

Finally, a little after 1:30 a.m., we’re finished! Smirnoff takes time to thank everyone for their hard work, and I see their smiles and appreciation. It’s been a long couple of days for us all, but most of all for Smirnoff, who tells us that she is flying to London later in the day to share her love for dance with her British fans. The lady certainly has the energy for it.
